Instagram updates - Jan 2025

Instagram is in the process of changing the grid. It's going from a square (1:1 ratio) grid to portrait (3:4 ratio). There is also a new optimal size for creating and uploading posts (4:5 ratio).

There are a couple of things to note - the dimensions to create & upload content is different from the overall Instagram grid dimensions, and some people will still see the old square grid for a while.

To make sure your content will look good on the feed, make sure to keep text and main images to a centred square 'safe zone' no more than 1015x1015 pixels.

It's also a great time to reflect on how easy it is to understand you content at a glance.

Is text easily legible, too small, too busy? Is the font too difficult to read, does the colour of text contrast well with the background? Do images support the message?

Ensuring your content is easy to read and understand lets more people engage with it. It's worth taking a couple of extra minutes to review it, and write an image description, or you'll be turning away people before they even know what you have to offer.
